This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Malaysia, two countries that share a long history of friendship and cooperation. To commemorate this milestone, the Vietnam - Malaysia Friendship Association (VMFA) of Can Tho city held its congress for the 2023 - 2028 term at Nam Can Tho University on August 11, 2023.

The congress was a great opportunity to review the past achievements and challenges of the association, and to plan for the future development of the friendly relations between the two countries. The event was attended by more than 50 delegates from various departments, ministries, branches and sub-associations of organizations in Can Tho city. They discussed and evaluated the activities, outcomes and limitations of the VMFA in the previous term. They also elected the new executive committee of the VMFA, which consists of 15 members.

The VMFA has played an important role in fostering cooperation and diplomacy between Vietnam and Malaysia in various fields, such as culture, education, trade, tourism, science and technology. The association has organized and participated in many events and activities to promote mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.

Some of the notable achievements of the VMFA in the past term include:

  • Organizing educational exchanges, seminars, workshops, exhibitions and visits to enhance the cultural ties between Vietnam and Malaysia.
  • Supporting Vietnamese students and workers in Malaysia, as well as Malaysian students and workers in Vietnam, through providing scholarships, legal assistance, health care and social activities.
  • Facilitating trade and investment opportunities between Vietnamese and Malaysian businesses, especially in the fields of agriculture, fisheries, manufacturing, energy and digital economy.
  • Contributing to the regional peace and stability by supporting the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 and cooperating on issues such as maritime security, counter-terrorism, climate change and pandemic response.

The Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO) highly appreciated the efforts and contributions of the VMFA in the past term. The VUFO awarded a certificate of merit to the collective of VMFA of Can Tho city, and commended some individuals who had outstanding achievements in the past term.

As a member and an ambassador of the VMFA, I am proud to be part of this meaningful association. I hope that we will continue to work together to strengthen and develop the friendship, cooperation and mutual development between Vietnam and Malaysia in the future.
