Sharing more useful information about cancer treatment

SHARING MORE USEFUL INFORMATION ABOUT
CANCER TREATMENT

On the morning of July 29th, much useful information and advances in cancer research, diagnosis, and treatment were shared at the International Workshop " Management of oncology in a New Era: Updating recent advances in diagnosis and treatment of cancer in Vietnam and Worldwide,” which took place in Can Tho City. The workshop was organized by the Nam Can Tho University in collaboration with the Nam Can Tho University Hospital, with the participation of more than 500 delegates, including leading experts, professors, doctors, and pharmacists specializing in oncology in Vietnam and abroad.

At the workshop, much useful information about the latest research in the field of oncology was shared, such as an overview of esophagectomy in the treatment of esophageal cancer; advances in gastric cancer treatment in Vietnam; updates on progress in the multimodality treatment of colorectal cancer; advances in lung cancer treatment in Vietnam; robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery for renal tumors with abdominal vena cava bud; laparoscopic kidney-conserving tumor resection for cT1b stage; the latest techniques in radiotherapy; liver transplantation in liver cancer; progress and difficulties in implementing palliative care for cancer patients in Can Tho and the Mekong Delta; the application of molecular biology in cancer diagnosis and treatment at Can Tho Cancer Hospital; and the challenges in the surgical treatment of patients with advanced glioblastoma with serious systemic complications… The workshop provided opportunities for researchers, lecturers, doctors, and students to exchange scholarly ideas and expand research cooperation in the field of health sciences, particularly advances in cancer treatment.

Prof. Dr. Le Quang Nghia, former Deputy Director of Binh Dan Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, shared an overview of esophagectomy in the treatment of esophageal cancer at the workshop

According to estimates by the World Health Organization, globally there are nearly 20 million new cases of cancer and over 10 million deaths from this disease each year, of which two-thirds are in developing countries. Meanwhile, citing data from the International Conference on Cancer Prevention and Control 2022 in Hanoi, Assoc. Prof. Dam Van Cuong, Director of the Nam Can Tho University Hospital, said that the incidence of cancer in Vietnam is the second highest in the world. Each year, Vietnam records 200,000 new cases, and the number of deaths is up to 82,000 cases. The death rate from cancer in Vietnam is 73.5%, while that of the world is 59.7% and 67.9% in developing countries. This shows that the death rate from cancer in Vietnam is high, mainly due to late detection and poor treatment results.

Delegates at home and abroad attended the workshop

According to Assoc. Prof. Dam Van Cuong, the cause of cancer comes from a single cell. The transformation from a normal cell to a cancerous cell is a multi-stage process, from a precancerous lesion to a malignant tumor. These changes are the result of an interaction between a person's genetic factors and three types of external agents, including physical carcinogens, such as ultraviolet and radiation, radioactivity, and ionizing radiation; chemical carcinogens, such as asbestos, components of tobacco smoke, pesticides, and water pollution; and biological agents, such as infections with certain viruses, bacteria, or parasites.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung, Chairman of the Nam Can Tho University Council, presented flowers to leading experts, professors, and doctors participating in the workshop

According to Assoc. Prof. Dam Van Cuong, although it is the leading cause of death in the world, cancer can be minimized and controlled through the application of prevention and detection strategies and early treatment.
