The workshop attracted more than 500 experts, professors, doctors, and pharmacists; leading domestic and foreign cardiovascular specialists; and representatives from the health sector, businesses, and students.

According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dam Van Cuong, Director of Nam Can Tho University Hospital, this workshop was held in the context that there are more than 100 different types of cancer and cancer is the disease with the leading mortality rate in the world. He cited data from an International Cancer Conference in Hanoi in 2022, which showed that Vietnam has the second-highest cancer rate in the world. Each year, Vietnam records 200,000 more cases, leading to  82,000 deaths. The death rate from cancer in Vietnam is 73.5%, while that of the world is 59.7%, due to most cases being detected late and treatment results being not high.

Four sessions of the workshop reported on advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment in Vietnam, such as advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment around the world, advances and difficulties in the diagnosis and treatment of oncological diseases in the Western part of Vietnam, and the competition of young scientific researchers.

Prof. Phillip Tran, a cardiologist from Yavapai Arizona Medical Center and MidWestern University (USA), commented, “This seminar is of very high quality because there are many leading experts from both home and abroad updating innovations in cancer treatment. For example, there is a professor from the University of Milan, who is the creator of the university's liver cancer surgery method that has been applied all over the world."

“Nam Can Tho University Hospital, although new in operation, has already treated complex cancer cases, and in the future, with the foundation of a university, supported by many domestic and foreign experts, I believe that this hospital will become a pioneering center in cancer treatment in the Mekong Delta and the whole of Vietnam,” added Dr. Phillip Tran.

Nam Can Tho University Hospital is part of Nam Can Tho University, operating from June 2022 under the model of "enterprise within the university". The hospital has eleven floors, a construction cost of VND 860 billion, 300 beds, and 29 departments with nearly 300 staff comprised of experienced consultants, doctors, and nurses, who have come from domestic and foreign hospitals.
