FACULTY OF BASIC SCIENCES

1. INTRODUCTION

The Faculty of Basic Sciences was established by Decision No. 07/QD-CTHDQT-ĐHNCT on January 28th, 2013, by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Nam Can Tho University. Initially, the faculty offered courses in subjects such as Mathematics, Government, and Physical Education. Today, the Faculty is home to a team of dedicated professors and instructors who are responsible for teaching classes, writing textbooks, and conducting academic research in their respective fields.

2. MISSION - FUNCTION

The Faculty of Basic Sciences operates according to Nam Can Tho University’s guidelines and best practices. The faculty carries out the tasks assigned by the University’s Board of Directors and management board.

At the Faculty of Basic Sciences, the teachers and staff undertake a range of responsibilities. These include developing detailed outlines for training programs, teaching basic science courses, conducting scientific research and educational activities; as well as coordinating the development of training programs, and writing textbooks aligned with subject goals.

Faculty members are committed to researching and implementing innovative teaching methods and consistently evaluating the learning outcomes of their students. To further enhance their teaching skills, they also participate in short-term training opportunities and work collaboratively to develop the abilities of their colleagues. Lastly, faculty actively engages in science and technology activities at Nam Can Tho University and conducts scientific research related to their fields of expertise.

3. PERSONEL

The Faculty of Basic Sciences consists of the following units: the Dean's Office, the Faculty Council, the Department of Political Science, the Department of Mathematics, the Department of Physics, and the Department of Physical Education

The faculty members are responsible for teaching and evaluating a range of courses that are essential for undergraduate students. These courses include political science, mathematics, statistics, physics, and physical education.

Furthermore, the faculty members provide invaluable mentorship to undergraduate students in scientific research, preparing them for academic competitions sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Training and other prestigious organizations.

4. ACTIVITIES

The Faculty of Basic Sciences at Nam Can Tho University has received recognition as an outstanding academic unit for their contributions and achievements in the past decade. The faculty members have fulfilled their teaching responsibilities, creating comprehensive syllabi, lectures, textbooks, and test banks for their courses. They have also been diligent in their pedagogical methods, utilizing instructional technology to improve the quality of teaching and learning at the university. Additionally, the faculty and staff adhere to university rules and regulations while conducting their work.

Furthermore, the Faculty has contributed to the field of academia through their publications in 16 reputable journals and presentations of 16 papers at national and international conferences.

• The Faculty of Basic Sciences actively participates in university activities such as admission counseling, union activities, and youth activities.
• The Department of Physical Education trains the university's teams and has achieved awards in various sports.

Notable prizes include:

• Third prize in women's soccer at Can Tho city in 2013, 2015, and 2016
• Consolation prize in athletics-students at Can Tho city in 2013 and 2015
• Third prize in men's singles in student badminton at Can Tho city in 2014
• First prize in men's soccer at VUG in 2017 and 2019, third prize in 2018, and national consolation prize in 2019
• First prize in men's soccer at the Can Tho student sports festival in 2018, 2019, and 2021.

Additionally, The Faculty is not only excellent in teaching, but also in research. One of their recent projects, led by the Department of Physical Education, explored how to enhance the swimming performance of students at Nam Can Tho University. This project was funded by the University and had impressive outcomes.

The results of the project:

• Showed the alignment with faculty goals and vision.
• Inspired the first-year students to succeed in their studies.
• Eased the stress for students and keeped students from droping out.

5. DEVELOPMENT ORIENTATION

Building on our past achievements, the faculty of Basic Sciences has a clear vision and a strategic plan for the next five years. We have a dedicated team of faculty and staff who work collaboratively and actively pursue professional development, knowledge enhancement, and scholarly research. We also aim for excellence in key areas such as organization, leadership, coaching, and the use of technology and innovative teaching techniques. Through these proactive efforts, we hope to continuously improve the quality of education at Nam Can Tho University.
